After Facebook acquired Instagram, the number of users on the service skyrocketed. The company was struggling to maintain the trust and safety that had made it a haven for creative expression, when Pete was asked to be the first Facebook engineer to join the Instagram team. Over time, it became apparent to Pete that this problem was intractable enough to be a company of its own. Pete and his colleague Josh, teamed with Julian, who had built similar systems at Google, to join forces and found Smyte.
